This is the English website of a project whose aim is to give information about the belgian songwriter Jacques Brel. The project was spontaneously started out of literal passion and is a completeley non-profit task. The information produced and published here concerns the songs of Jacques Brel and the interpretations of his songs (cover-songs), upon which we've created a dedicated database.
Since the beginning of Jacques Brel's career, namely from the middle of the 1950s, several singers started to record new versions of his songs. From then on, every year saw the birth of dozens of new cover songs, but it is since 1997 - around 20 years after Brel's death - that his cover songs have had a real boom.
It is therefore a very consolidated phenomenon, constantly increasing and much differentiated in musical and performance styles, language and origin of the performers. It can be summarized with the overall number of cover songs that we know and report in this site: 5.249 on february 31, 2010.
At this moment, the project is active in six languages: Italian, French, Dutch, English, Spanish and Portuguese.
